What is important in a naturalistic garden concept? This course answers that question. You will learn how to use materials and plants for designing a naturalistic garden and create freehand sketches for environmental planning. Developing your own ideas and solutions — that is the focus of this training. Content Module "Design and Representation" (20 days in person)

• Plant use - Naturalistic plant use, plant sociology and communities, plant life forms
• Soil and substrates
• Perennial use: Eco-strategies according to Grime / perennial habitats / naturalistic planting concepts
• Woody plant use: Habitats of woody plants, serving, leading, accompanying woody plants
• Planting design: Plants as design elements, space formation with plants
• Care of perennials and woody plants, care tables
• Drawing planting plans, planning aids, quantities, presentation of planting ideas
• Plant knowledge (use / knowledge / care) - Native wild perennials for various locations
• Horticultural perennials with ecological value
• Native woody plants for private gardens

Module "Planning and Technology" (6 days in person)

• Planning - Planning process in practice
• Planning phases in detail from concept to maintenance
• Legal basics for planning and construction
• Construction site visits and excursions
• Technology - Basic procurement and scheduling
• Rough cost estimation, fee billing, detailed planning, execution, and maintenance
• Drainage and retention

Module "Marketing" (3 days in person)

• Development and importance of marketing - What is marketing?
• Marketing tools
• Marketing planning, planning tools
• Internal and external market analysis
• Analysis of competitors
• Sales, appearance, psychology - Basics of communication, communication barriers
• Market and customer segments, customer types and their demands
• Dealing with difficult customers
• Sales forms, sales conversations, communication tools
• Quotation design

Presentation techniques - Personal presentation skills, fear of public speaking, stage fright
- Structure of presentations and presentation formats

Prerequisites
Different educational backgrounds require proof of at least 6 months of practical experience in horticulture, planning, or related fields. Basic knowledge of a CAD program is required to participate in the course. Persons with comparable professional competence may be admitted. The course management will review possible admission together with the technical leadership.

Learning objectives
After completing the "Naturalistic Garden Design" course, you will be able to:

• Plan in all phases, from inventory to implementation planning;
• Formulate individual, situation-appropriate ideas and solutions;
• Create representative freehand sketches or hand plans;
• Develop concepts for high-quality environmental planning;
• Use location-appropriate plants;
• Position your ideas using various marketing concepts;
• Present confidently to clients.

Target group
The course is aimed at professionals from the "green industry" involved in planning and designing private gardens. It is a further training for persons with completed vocational training (EFZ) as:

• Gardener specializing in perennials, ornamental plants, nursery, or landscape gardening, or with a qualification as
• Plant use specialist or naturalistic garden and landscape construction (NGL), or with completed professional examination (BP) as
• Senior gardener or with a diploma from a higher technical school (HF)
• Diploma in garden and landscape engineering or with a degree (BSc) in:
• Environmental engineering or landscape architecture

Remarks
Expect additional expenses for travel, meals, possibly accommodations during excursions and course days at ZHAW, as well as literature and expenses for proof of achievement.
