Description
Martha Argerich makes Le Piano Symphonique a fixed address among international piano festivals as a “Pianiste Associée.” The 2027 edition places the pianist at the center in honor of her 85th birthday. The opening concert with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra already lives from the spirit of encounter with which Argerich shapes the festival and – according to the specialist magazine FonoForum – makes it one of the most exciting festivals ever. It may seem paradoxical that a world star like Martha Argerich does not perform solo but together with friends and trusted musicians on stage. But exactly for this Argerich-&-Friends concept, Le Piano Symphonique offers the ideal platform. This is already shown in 2027 by her first of four appearances in the opening concert. The “Friends” here also include the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Under the musical direction of Gregory Ahss, Martha Argerich and the musicians of the orchestra meet on equal footing in Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor. Part of Argerich's role as “Pianiste Associée” is also that she uses her network, grown over decades, to pave the way for young pianists. In the opening concert, two pianists of the younger generation can be experienced: Tianyao Lyu in the Concert Piece for Piano and Orchestra in G major, Giorgi Gigashvili in the Concert Allegro with Introduction in D minor. The program also stands in the sign of friendly, even familial connections with Robert Schumann's three compositions for piano and orchestra. The composer wrote them all for his wife, the pianist Clara Schumann. He also dedicated the Concert Allegro op. 134 to the young family friend and hopeful Johannes Brahms when he was already in the Endenich sanatorium. All three works also implement the guiding principle of Le Piano Symphonique: the connection of the piano with a symphonic dimension. Even before composing the piano concerto, Schumann envisioned “a middle ground between symphony, concert, and large sonata,” which should not simply be a “concert for the virtuoso.” In the originally conceived one-movement fantasy piano concerto, he created in 1845 a portrait of his love for Clara from the contrast between stormy Florestan and dreamy Eusebius themes. In the Concert Piece op. 92, four years later, he gave the piano a more dominant, “very passionate” role, as Clara enthusiastically wrote. She immediately counted the Concert Allegro op. 134 among the “most brilliant pieces Robert ever wrote.” Cast
