Premiered in Vienna in 1786, Mozart's masterpiece is considered the epitome of comic opera. The provocative source material by Beaumarchais was banned in pre-revolutionary France due to its criticism of the ruling class; however, Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte transformed the political dynamite into a timeless psychological portrait. Here, nobility and servants interact musically on equal footing for the first time.
