Since the New York pianist Lawrence Fields released his debut album «To The Surface» in 2024, his career as a bandleader has taken off rapidly. Fields is not only an extraordinary pianist and master of various keyboard instruments – he has consistently ranked at the top in magazine polls for years – but his ability to combine catchy melodies with sophisticated harmonies has already earned him a unique place among the many talented instrumentalists of today's jazz scene. As a teenager, he struggled for a long time with the decision between an IT career and his passion for music; a scholarship to Berklee College of Music ultimately tipped the scales. Subsequently, he established himself in the jazz elite and collaborated with artists like Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, and Nicholas Payton. He has since found like-minded musicians in trumpeter Christian Scott (alias Chief Adjuah) and Joe Lovano, becoming an important member of their respective bands. With Lovano, he performed this year as a soloist in a symphonic tribute project honoring John Coltrane – among others in his hometown St. Louis, the city that produced the famous Miles Davis. With the Supersonic Trio, Fields expands his profile as a musician rooted in the jazz piano tradition, incorporating the sounds of his youth: soul jazz, funk, and hip-hop. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of Ramsey Lewis, Les McCann, George Duke, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, and Geri Allen – artists all known for their immense musical openness and versatility. He has perfected this formation over years through regular live performances in New York City with top-tier musicians. Kyle Miles has developed a style of electric bass that avoids common clichés; oscillating between a solid bass foundation and expansive, atmospheric soundscapes – capable of enriching both the tonal colors of a piano and a Fender Rhodes – he significantly contributes to the harmonious band sound. Elé Howell is one of the most talented young drummers in the scene and is an exceptional talent appreciated by giants like Ravi Coltrane and Gary Bartz for their bands.
