Description

"Greed is good?!" – Molière's classic tells the story of the old Harpagon, whose greed and avarice turn him into a possessed tyrant over his family. He plans to marry his daughter Élise to a wealthy old man whom she does not love at all. He himself wants to marry Mariane, who is loved by his own son Cléante. Thus, the young lovers secretly devise their own plans behind his back. Family conflicts, a stolen treasure, and surprising twists lead to a turbulent play of deception, cunning, and power struggles among parents, children, admirers, and servants. Alongside "The Imaginary Invalid," "The Miser" is perhaps the most famous character comedy from the pen of Molière (1622–1673). The lead role of Harpagon was initially played by the author himself and later by numerous acting greats, from August Wilhelm Iffland to Louis de Funès and Harald Juhnke. In the production by Gaspard Legendre, the eccentricities of the old man are less in focus, and rather the love of the young people takes center stage: for forbidden, contradictory, and unfulfilled desires permeate all characters in a play about money, love, desire, and the unstoppable movement of life.
