Description

As free spirits of traditional string music, violinist Matthias Lincke, Elias Menzi on the Appenzeller hammered dulcimer, and bass singer and yodeler Hiasl connect their traditional roots with their urge for spontaneous musical expression. In the traditional "Altfrentscher ensemble" (violin, hammered dulcimer, double bass), they surprise with daring combinations of string music and improvisation. When violinist Andrea Kirchhofer encounters the Altfrentscher ensemble, she mixes their homely string music with novel sounds from klezmer, minimal music, and tango. The quartet plays with unusual sounds in the tension between the quirky jazz of Thelonious Monk and classical Appenzeller string music, shaped by musician families like the Mosers or Alders. In their current program "Walzerwahnsinn" (Waltz Madness), they delve into the hypnotic spinning movement and the primal trance of the waltz, making it spin out of control! "Altfrentsch," a term now rarely used in the Appenzeller dialect, traces back to the German expression "altfränkisch." Originating from Middle High German "altvrenkisch" ("in the manner of the old Franks"), it means "old-fashioned," "according to old customs."
