Description

Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich wrote Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk with librettist Alexander Preis based on the novella of the same name by Nikolai Leskov. The composer described his opera as tragicomic. The main character, Katerina, is a murderer haunted by guilt. However, Shostakovich's opera also tells, with a bitterly grotesque flavor, about the moral decline of an entire society in a Russian village. This dull and ruthless environment forces its inhabitants to live without hope and love, and becomes the cause of the main heroine's downfall.
