Description

In 1995, Maryse Condé published La Migration des cœurs, a major work of her oeuvre that had long gone unnoticed. Her project is dizzying: to transpose the plot of Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë to the Caribbean space. The windy moors of Yorkshire thus give way to post-slavery Guadeloupe at the turn of the 19th century. At the heart of this lush landscape is the tumultuous story of Razyé, a young Black man adopted as a child by the notable of Béké descent Hubert Gagneur, and Cathy, his daughter. A mixture of passionate love, pride, and social violence, their unbreakable bond unfolds over three generations, allowing Maryse Condé to reveal what remained hidden in Emily Brontë's work: first, the issue of racism, but also the political dimension of revenge and fatality.
On stage, Anne Monfort brings to life the language of both authors through meticulous editing: Wuthering Heights appears as a subtle background behind the Caribbean story, to better highlight its underlying forces. Exploring the political relationships at play in intimate relationships, the director unfolds the story of these torn characters in a rapidly changing Guadeloupe, creating a spectacle that is a blend of passionate saga and social fresco.
