Thus say the sacred texts and many ancient legends... The Wandering Jew, this tireless pilgrim, is the most famous traveler of our world. He is the man who always goes, knowing only one thing: one day his liberation will come.
In 1856, Gustave Doré created twelve splendid engravings on the legend of the Wandering Jew that quickly made a sensation in the artistic community. His brother Ernest was inspired by them to compose music, and Pierre Dupont, a romantic songwriter, wrote a long poem in twelve songs, including a thousand details from the engravings. They published these works together in a giant-format book. Today, the La Renaissance Company takes the content of this book to create a show, which features the engravings, singing, and the poem performed by Lydia Weyrich. Accompanied by Gabriel Esteban's cello and Eloïse Fares' harp, pieces of music by Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, Bartok, Crumb, Gounod, and Jewish folk songs serve as the backdrop for this show and highlight the states of mind of the tireless pilgrim.
This show is presented at the Museum of the Reformation as part of the Ferdinand Hodler exhibition, echoing the painter's painting The Wandering Jew loaned by the Museum of Winterthur and the illustrated Bible by Gustave Doré, which is exhibited on this occasion. It has been performed at the Alexis-Forel Museum in Morges, at the Romainmôtier Abbey, and at the Engelberts Foundation in Mies.
