"18-year-old Beatrice is an apprentice in a Parisian hair salon. She lives a reclusive life with her single mother, her only friend being a colleague with a vibrant love life. During a shared vacation by the sea, Beatrice meets and falls in love with François, a philosophy student from a more affluent background. In Paris, she moves in with him, renovates their home, and manages the household. However, François soon feels discomfort. He is embarrassed by his girlfriend's social status and lack of education. He prepares for a breakup with Beatrice... 'I will never understand what you think.' Isabelle Huppert portrays a young woman in her first international film success, who breaks under the weight of her first love – with freckles, stubborn red hair, and an almost childlike seriousness. La dentellière is both prophecy and promise. 'She was one of those who want to be explored, who you have to look at closely,' is the last line in the film. It also refers to the young actress, who had previously gazed unwaveringly into the camera for minutes."
