La Cetra Barockorchester Vokalensemble Basel Andrea Marcon, conductor Muffat 24-voice mass «Missa in labore requies» & Vivaldi's Gloria in D major, RV 589 The program combines two grandiose sacred works – the monumental, rarely heard Missa in labore requies by Georg Muffat with Vivaldi's most famous sacred work, the Gloria in D major. Georg Muffat is one of the most interesting composers of the High Baroque, a compositional cosmopolitan and an important bridge-builder between musical styles – yet only known to connoisseurs! Born in 1653 in Savoy, the Scottish-born Muffat studied with Lully in Paris and then lived just around the corner in Strasbourg. He fled from there due to military conflicts and eventually settled in Salzburg after detours in Rome. Together with his colleague Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, he made Salzburg one of the most important centers for sacred music in Europe in the late 17th century. The magnificent Missa in labore requies is Muffat's only surviving church music work, possibly created in connection with the celebrations for the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Salzburg in 1682. It stands in the tradition of polychorality, which developed in Venice in the 16th century. For works of this dimension, both vocal and instrumental choirs had to be used, distributed across the various galleries. This will also be the case in the Stadtcasino – the orchestra and the two choirs will be distributed across five different groups on stage and the balcony. Muffat's mass stands in contrast to Vivaldi's Gloria in D major, RV 589. With this work, we continue the popular tradition of sing-along concerts from previous years and warmly invite enthusiastic amateur singers to actively participate and bring the work to life together: Likely composed around 1715, the Gloria represents the pinnacle of Vivaldi's sacred output.
