The American artist Jeffrey Gibson is occupying the entrance hall of the Chipperfield building with a monumental, vividly colored installation, which is expected to be on view until the end of 2026. Painting, sculpture, screen printing, bead embroidery, ceramics, and textiles come together to form an immersive Gesamtkunstwerk – open to performative activations. After his celebrated solo exhibition at the US Pavilion of the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024 and before the unveiling of a new facade image at the Metropolitan Museum in New York in September 2025, Gibson is realizing his first project in a continental European museum: a site-specific work specially designed for the foyer Haefner titled "boshullichi / inlʋchi – we will continue to change." The title combines two words from the Choctaw language, both meaning "change": "Boshullichi" means to break something into pieces, to dismantle and to change. "Inlʋchi" means to do something differently, to restore and rebuild. Jeffrey Gibson combines indigenous traditions from North America with elements of modern and contemporary art. He employs techniques such as weaving, bead embroidery, ceramics, and basketry – and combines them with geometric and gestural abstraction. Art historical references also play a role: his works recall, among others, Kasimir Malevich, Anni Albers, Corita Kent, or the indigenous artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. Gibson demonstrates how diverse and powerful indigenous contemporary art can be – far from clichés and narrow categories.
