The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has brought the topic of war back to Europe with renewed urgency. At the same time, a look into history shows that Eastern Europe has repeatedly been a battleground for conflicts since the 19th century – in the tension field of great empires, nationalism, and competing spheres of influence. Phases of war and peace, decline and renewal have shaped the region sustainably. The lecture series traces these developments through key events – from Napoleon's campaign to Moscow, the Crimean War, to the world wars, as well as other independence and civil wars – and thus offers historical perspectives on current conflicts.
