Klosterkilbi St. Urban

Description

A centuries-old tradition that attracts a large crowd of visitors every second Sunday in October. Since 1778, the day of St. Urban's "church consecration" has always been on the second Sunday in October. Saint Urban I is primarily highly revered in wine-growing regions, especially in Franconia, Baden, Austria, and Alsace. The reason is that winegrowers complete the planting of vineyards during the time of Urban's memorial day: "If Urban's day has beautiful sunshine, it promises a lot of good wine."
Over time, the patronal festival (church consecration) increasingly became a secular event. The Kilbi became the epitome of a folk festival, an autumn festival, which subtly also included - and still includes - a harvest thanksgiving. The St. Urban Kilbi is also somewhat of an "ecumenical meeting," as there is probably no other event of this size and significance that radiates so strongly into so-called reformed areas (Bernese Oberaargau and Aargau). Thus, it has long been part of the annual calendar not only for many families in the cantons of Lucerne and Solothurn but also in the Oberaargau region and the Zofingen district to visit the Klosterkilbi. The Klosterkilbi St. Urban extends from the Lucerne St. Urban community of Pfaffnau into the Bernese region to Roggwil. Various clubs from both communities offer entertainment during these three days until the early morning hours. On the Lucerne side, the Kilbi starts at the Lunapark and the large festival tent of the St. Urban music society and ends on Roggwil soil at the Farmer Rock Schüür. Early Sunday morning, many market vendors take over the cantonal road in St. Urban from the monastery bakery and the St. Urban street in Roggwil, so that shortly thereafter thousands of people - young and old - can stream through the market stalls set up on both sides of the street.
