SYNOPSIS: A bounty of $5,000 is placed on the head of the notorious outlaw Ben Vandergroat (Robert Ryan). Howard Kemp (James Stewart) intends to claim this reward to buy back his ranch. With the help of the dishonorably discharged cavalry lieutenant Roy Anderson (Ralph Meeker), and the eternally unlucky gold seeker Jesse Tate (Millard Mitchell), he manages to capture the outlaw and his companion Lina Patch (Janet Leigh). Vandergroat tries to turn the three bounty hunters against each other in hopes of escaping the gallows…
