Description

Kitsch is straightforward, easy to understand, and successful. This explains its popularity as well as rejection. It often crosses the boundaries of good taste. It can be a valuable memory and comfort, but also intend to manipulate the masses. It remains important to distinguish historically (art-historically) between kitsch and visual arts. Using numerous examples – from copied Baroque angels, seemingly meaningless garden gnomes to works by individual artists like Ottmar Hörl, Jeff Koons, Claire Ochsner, and many others – we explore current definitions.
