Giotto's frescoes in the upper church of San Francesco in Assisi are considered turning points in Western art history. With great liveliness, Giotto narrates the life of Saint Francis shortly before 1300. The monumental fresco cycle can also be read as a reinterpretation of the Franciscan life. The socially critical aspects of Franciscan piety are omitted. Instead, the church hierarchy appears in a propagandistically reinforced light. The lecture shows how much Giotto was influenced by the patrons in choosing the themes. This does not diminish the grandeur of the murals.
