It doesn't happen often that we invite artists or bands to perform on stage twice within a year. With the London duo Kiioto, we couldn't resist, as the songs on their new album "Black Salt" are of an introspective elegance that captivates us. It's wonderful how familiar styles of pop music are woven in such a refreshing way with film noir, folk, trip-hop, jazz, and chamber music. In Lou Rhodes' voice (known to some of us from her time with the British trip-hop band LAMB), the enchanting timbre of longing resonates, around which Rohan Heath (also a veteran of the 90s UK club scene) constructs a delicate framework of piano, Rhodes, jazz drums, soul guitar, and double bass. Both had turned their backs on music for many years; Lou wrote poetry, Rohan studied economics. Ultimately, it was a joint jam session on the piano in Lou's kitchen that brought the Kiioto project to life. "Black Salt" is the result of tensions, conflicts, and self-reflection, Lou told in an interview. The fact that such beautiful music emerged from this should give us hope.
