Description
At 83 years old, pianist Kenny Barron is one of the few living legends who has traversed many creative periods of jazz. From Dizzy Gillespie to Yusef Lateef and from Freddie Hubbard to Ornette Coleman, including Joe Henderson, Chet Baker, and Buddy Rich, the American musician has faced all styles with phenomenal adaptability, while maintaining his deeply traditional style. He had long wanted to record an album with his favorite singers, and he did so in "Songbook," his latest trio album with Cécile McLorin Salvant, Jean Baylor, Catherine Russell, Kurt Elling, Anne Hampton Callaway, Tyreek McDole, and Ekep Nkwelle. The latter is one of the new voices to follow closely, heard notably with Emmet Cohen or Endea Owens. Kenny Barron (p), Ekep Nkwelle (voc), Russel Hall (b), Jonathan Barber (dm) www. kennybarron. com
