Understanding wasps – and recognizing their important role in nature. Wasps and hornets often have a bad reputation – but they play a surprisingly important role in our ecosystem. In the course, you will learn about the six species of social wasps that typically occur near settlements in Zurich: How are their colonies structured? Why does each colony only last one season and why do only the young queens survive the winter to establish a new nest in spring? You will also learn how they feed their larvae with flies and plant pests, why they are valuable beneficial insects because of this – and why a wasp or hornet nest in the neighborhood often means more benefit than concern.
