Description

“Friendship is the place of choice, of legend, of anecdote, the place where we tell each other together, where we can reinvent ourselves.” Céline Sciamma Alice, the narrator, is half Kabyle, half Norman. On one hand, we follow her entire school years, marked by events such as September 11, the Iraq War, and the shock of the French presidential elections in 2002 – events that make up what she calls “her great story of racism.” On the other hand, Alice, a young adult at the end of her studies, reunites with her childhood best friend, Mad, who has returned from Mali and can no longer bear having to repeatedly apply for his temporary residence permits, despite having spent his entire youth in France. Mad and Alice then decide to enter into a sham marriage. Because it is the only thing Alice can do to help her friend, as this will be the touchstone of her commitment, the final point of her youth. With seriousness and mischief, “Jusque dans nos bras” makes friendship a means of resistance against a patriarchal, capitalist, and exclusionary society. As a collective and as friends, these words from Céline Sciamma resonate with us particularly. Although friendship is seen as secondary or even dispensable after youth – to what extent can it question prevailing models by proposing new narratives? How can we view our respective youth so that it feels inspiring and revitalizing?
