Jules Spinatsch has created an extensive body of work over the past 35 years, exhibited, collected, and published both domestically and internationally. The exhibition at the Bündner Kunstmuseum showcases the broad media spectrum of his works and approaches. The artist transforms his own and found visual material into publications, photo series, photographic installations, and video works. Starting from a documentary approach – "of what is, not what should be" – Spinatsch explores the possibilities of photography: from immediate observation of social events on site to the use of semi-automatic recording methods that combine seemingly opposing principles such as chance and control into new image forms. Places like the Vienna Opera Ball, the WEF in Davos, software companies, nuclear power plants, prisons, winter sports events, or bubbling mud pools in Iceland become his research spaces. At the Bündner Kunstmuseum, the artist presents a new spatial dramaturgy in the second basement level. Spinatsch invites – and at the same time challenges – viewers to engage with questions of perception, power, and control, as well as their construction and representation through media images. He examines issues of authorship and copyright and also makes visible the potential, boundaries, and instability of photographic images.
