What is man, what is his life? These questions inspired the virtuoso multi-instrumentalist and recipient of the German Cabaret Award Josef Brustmann for his stage programs, poetry, and prose. Now, a whole book has been created from it, written in a wonderful language: rough and concise, like from a peasant legacy – close to the heart, bittersweet, and truly dictated by life. It is also the story of his family, which Brustmann tells. And one about music. It carries him through life – for which, as he writes, there is no dress rehearsal. As the eighth of nine children, Josef Brustmann grew up in modest circumstances, but amidst all kinds of natural phenomena: nocturnal barn sounds of horses and cows, the mysterious rustling of streams and forests, complex, polyphonic singing of 300 frogs. The wren taught him to sing, the cricket to play the zither. Brustmann weaves biographical backgrounds into his comedy program in an impressive way – something that makes the satirist unique.
