“Expect the Unexpected.” This famous slogan, which Tomi Ungerer created for The New York Times, perfectly captures what made the work of this exceptional artist so exciting. He loved to subvert conventions and surprise—and sometimes even shock—his audience, whether adults or children, in order to capture their attention. Tomi Ungerer (1931–2019), a native of Alsace, is considered one of the most important illustrators, children’s book authors, draftsmen, and commercial artists of the 20th and early 21st centuries. His body of work is vast. It includes more than 40,000 drawings, oil paintings, poster designs, collages, prints, and assemblage objects. In addition, there are around 140 books ranging from social satire to fairy tale collections, including modern classics such as *The Three Robbers* and *No Kiss for Mother*.
