Storione's deep understanding of both idioms, from the palos of flamenco to the harmonic complexity of modern jazz, forms the foundation for a captivating and innovative sound. Each composition – arranged exclusively for this ensemble – is a carefully crafted weave of structure and spontaneity, presenting the true essence of both genres. The ensemble is characterized by fiery flamenco rhythms, soulful melodies, and complex harmonies. Every performance is a masterful demonstration of improvisational freedom, embedded in the captivating, often complex rhythms of Andalusia. The interplay of the musicians is dynamic and telepathic, and their arrangements are fresh, inventive, and show exceptional musicality. The Yuri Storione Flamenco Jazz Quartet is a guarantee of musical excellence and a must for any program celebrating contemporary jazz, world music, and innovative crossover projects. For years, guitarists in the flamenco and gypsy jazz fields have impressed with their stunning technique and pronounced, melodic virtuosity. It will be exciting to hear how pianist Yuri Storione manages to implement this complex flamenco rhythm from Andalusia together with the band and on the piano. Yuri Storione | Piano, Arrangements and Compositions
Yuri Storione is a highly qualified jazz pianist and composer with three master's degrees and an impressive career. After his classical training, he studied at Jazzcampus Basel and established himself in the professional Swiss jazz scene. He was successful in renowned competitions such as the “Montreux Jazz” and the “Langnau Jazz Piano Competition.” Storione regularly appears at international jazz festivals across Europe (Basel OffBeat, Malaga Jazz, L’Estartit Jazz). His third album, “This Time The Dream’s on Us,” was released on the renowned “Montreux Jazz Label - TCB Records,” in collaboration with the world-famous drummer Jorge Rossy. Storione's collaborations with jazz greats such as Jeff Ballard, Perico Sambeat, and Max Ionata underline his position as an outstanding musician and visionary bandleader. Juan Cabillas | Saxophone and Palmas
Juan Cabillas, celebrated saxophonist and expert in rhythmic palmas, is the melodic bridge of the quartet. As a Spanish musician with deep roots in flamenco, his lyrical improvisation technique is seamlessly woven with the rhythmic structure of flamenco. Cabillas’ mastery of the saxophone as an authentic flamenco voice transforms traditional cantes into modern, jazzy narratives. He is an indispensable voice for the authenticity and avant-garde orientation of the project. Gianni Narduzzi | Double Bass / Electric Bass
Born in 1997, Gianni Narduzzi, originally from Rome, is a versatile bassist currently studying at Jazzcampus Basel with teachers such as Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy. Previously, he completed his bachelor's degree in jazz double bass in Portugal. Gianni's musical career includes projects in jazz, pop, and rock. As a bandleader, he released “Dharma Bonds” in 2022, an album of original compositions. His deep musical anchoring in the European scene and his dynamic presence on bass provide the indispensable foundation for the rhythmic complexity of flamenco jazz. Janis Jaunalksnis | Drums / Cajon
Janis Jaunalksnis, a drummer from Riga, Latvia, completed his studies at the Latvian Academy of Music and Jazzcampus Basel (under the direction of Professor Jefferson Ballard). Since the age of 18, he has worked professionally across a broad spectrum of genres, including classical, blues, Brazilian music, and jazz. His ability to effortlessly navigate the entire rhythmic spectrum from traditional swing to the intricate palmas of flamenco makes him the engine of this crossover quartet.
