Eight years ago, Patrick Bianco was already a guest with Dado Moroni and Berndt Reiter at Chutz. Back then with the project "Remembering George Robert". Unforgettable how the musical and physical giant Dado Moroni lifts the entire grand piano with his legs in intense moments! There is also a "swissedition" of Cannonsoul. However, we are very pleased to present you the international version. The lineup brings together four scenes: Swiss core band, top French trumpet class, world-class Italian pianist and bassist, and an Austrian as a swinging high-flyer. This combination guarantees joy of playing, virtuosity, and strong swing and gives the Cannonsoul repertoire new perspectives. A symbiosis to look forward to. “Cannonsoul feat. Dado Moroni” is the anniversary tour for the 22nd anniversary of Patrick Bianco’s Cannonsoul. The band stands for independent, contemporary hard bop from Switzerland: a highly swinging program of internal band arrangements that takes the language of classic mainstream jazz as a starting point but consistently transforms it into a personal handwriting. For 2026, this repertoire will be expanded by a fresh international lineup. The world-renowned Italian pianist Dado Moroni is the guest soloist. Fabien Mary, one of the defining trumpeters of the current European scene, joins. The rhythm section with Aldo Zunino on double bass and Bernd Reiter on drums ensures stylistic continuity and the characteristic Cannonsoul drive. The tour includes 12 concerts in the DACH region. The goal is to present the independent repertoire on a larger stage, strengthen international networking, create sustainable material (audio/video) for follow-up performances, and of course, inspire the audience. Cannonsoul cultivates an authentic mainstream jazz that is immediately accessible to the audience while offering the highest musical quality. Independence is important: Cannonsoul does not merely work as a tribute band but develops its own sound experiences in the spirit of soul jazz and hard bop. Tradition serves as a creative toolbox and stylistic language. Compositions and arrangements arise from the personalities of the musicians and reflect the spirit of the times without denying the roots. After winning the Swiss Jazz Award in 2016, a 10-year-later anniversary tour follows, combining local anchoring with international radiance. The Zurich alto saxophonist and bandleader Patrick Bianco has established himself with his warm, robust alto sound and strongly melodic phrasing as one of the most distinctive voices of straight-ahead and hard bop jazz in Switzerland. His playing style clearly follows the tradition of Cannonball Adderley and Charlie Parker: energetic, soulful, yet lyrical and narrative. Bianco combines an authentic bebop language with a personal tone and stage presence characterized by a high swing factor and communicative joy of playing. After his basic training in Jugendmusik Zürich 11 and Harmonie Oerlikon-Seebach, he gained big band experience in the North Big Band before furthering his education in international masterclasses and finally studying jazz at the Bern University of the Arts. Parallel to his artistic work, Bianco has been active for many years as a lecturer and saxophone teacher. In 2004, he founded "Patrick Bianco’s Cannonsoul," a Cannonball Adderley tribute band that developed into an internationally staffed formation. Cannonsoul has performed in important jazz clubs and festivals in Switzerland and Europe and received the Swiss Jazz Award in 2016. In his programs, Bianco cultivates the hard bop aesthetics of the 1950s/60s with a modern approach, great stylistic confidence, and strong ensemble drive. As a sought-after sideman, Bianco has been present for years in leading big bands at home and abroad, such as with Pepe Lienhard and Don Menza. He has also played in the Swiss Jazzschool Big Band, Swiss Jazz Orchestra, Swiss Army Big Band, and various theater, musical, TV, and studio productions. Fabien Mary | Trumpet
The French trumpeter and flugelhorn player Fabien Mary is one of the leading voices of European mainstream jazz. His clear, elegant tone also has a warm, “vocal” core; stylistically, he is deeply rooted in hard bop and combines lyrical economy with modern virtuosity. Mary’s playing is characterized by tasteful phrasing, buoyant timing, and pronounced ensemble sensitivity — qualities that make him internationally sought after as both a soloist and big band lead trumpeter. Mary began playing trumpet at eight, studied classical music, and supplemented this with jazz studies. In 1998, he moved to Paris and worked in leading French big bands and projects, including with musicians such as Gérard Badini, Michel Pastre, Pierre Bertrand, and Nicolas Folmer. In 2000, he co-founded the Vintage Orchestra, a large formation in the style of Thad Jones/Mel Lewis. There, he worked not only as a soloist but also as an arranger/composer; several internationally recognized album productions document this work. Between 2008 and 2011, Mary lived in New York, where he connected with the local scene and has since regularly performed in the USA. Mary received the Django d’Or “Jeune Talent” in 2003 and was nominated several times for the Django Reinhardt Prize of the Académie du Jazz. He has played with a long list of jazz greats, including Michel Legrand, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin, Harold Mabern, Dave Liebman, Archie Shepp, and many others — a clear sign of his international anchoring. Edgardo “Dado” Moroni has been one of the most important pianists of European and American straight-ahead jazz for decades. His style combines the harmonic sophistication of the bebop school with a powerful, highly swinging touch and great melodic imagination. Moroni is a pianist who does not quote tradition but continues it in an independent, captivating language — as a soloist, but above all as a sensitive accompanist with strong drive. Moroni began playing piano at four and is largely self-taught. Already as a teenager, he worked professionally in Italy; at 17, he recorded his first album. In the 1980s, he established himself throughout Europe until former Duke Ellington bassist Jimmy Woods brought him to Zurich. There, Moroni shaped the sound of the legendary Widder Bar for years as a member of the Jimmy Woods Trio and accompanied stars such as Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Zoot Sims, Bud Shank, Buddy DeFranco, and many others with this rhythm section. In 1991, Moroni became part of the New York jazz scene, performing at venues such as Blue Note, Birdland, and Village Vanguard. Since 2010, Moroni has been a professor of jazz piano at the Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” in Turin. Aldo Zunino | Bass
The Genoese double bassist Aldo Zunino has been a key figure in Italian and European mainstream/hard bop jazz for over three decades. His trademark is a large, acoustically natural bass sound and a confident walking foundation that gives bands warmth, stability, and drive. As a soloist, he convinces with melodic clarity and stylistic grounding in the tradition of Ray Brown and Paul Chambers. After piano and guitar lessons, Zunino switched to double bass at 17 and started his professional career in 1985. In 1992, he won the “AICS Jazz” prize, marking his breakthrough in Italy. Since then, he has continuously performed throughout Europe. From 1995, he was bassist for Steve Grossman for many years and regularly worked with musicians such as Bobby Durham, Riccardo Zegna, and the Bansigu Big Band in Genoa. His discography includes studio and live productions as a sideman and leader, especially in the context of Italian straight-ahead jazz. Parallel to his stage work, he has also been active pedagogically since the 1990s (jazz schools, workshops, and camps in Liguria and beyond). Berndt Reiter | Drums
The Austrian drummer and bandleader Bernd Reiter is one of the most prominent hard bop drummers in Europe. His playing is characterized by uncompromising swing, fine dynamic sensitivity, and a clear, forward-directed time. Reiter understands the drums as the elastic motor of the ensemble: supportive, driving, but always in direct communication with soloists and band. He studied with Nik Wonisch and from 2001 to 2007 at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Manfred Josel, Christian Salfellner, and Howard Curtis (Magister). He gained formative impulses in masterclasses with Billy Cobham, John Riley, Lewis Nash, Charlie Persip, Jimmy Cobb, and others. His stylistic range also includes classical projects such as the Haydn Orchestra Bruck/Mur. Since the 2000s, Reiter has toured internationally and played with an exceptionally long list of soloists. As a leader, he has released, among others, “Live at the Jazzland — Vienna” and the internationally acclaimed “Workout at Bird’s Eye” (SteepleChase, 2016). Awards include sponsorship prizes at the Jazzfestival “generations 04,” the Marianne-Mendt Talent Competition, and the Swiss Jazz Award 2016 (with Cannonsoul).
