Janet Cardiff – The Forty Part Motet

Description

The sound installation The Forty Part Motet (2001) by Canadian artist Janet Cardiff (*1957) focuses on the sculptural qualities of sound and offers a unique spatial auditory experience. The piece is based on the polyphonic Renaissance music piece Spem in Alium (circa 1570), composed by Thomas Tallis for eight choirs of five voices each. Janet Cardiff recorded the voices of the singers on separate tracks and has each voice played through one of the forty speakers arranged in an oval. The listener's movement in the space determines the experience and allows for both an intimate focus on individual solo voices and immersion into the suggestive, spatially expansive composition as a whole.
