Social researcher Khaled Hakami learns their language and experiences a culture shock that could be more surprising, funnier, and more astonishing. Humans have spent 95 percent of their history as hunters and gatherers, but by the next two generations, this form of society will no longer exist. Their nomadic life in the rainforests of the Malay Peninsula knows no social, political, or economic inequality, neither between men and women nor between children and adults. The stereotype of primitive Stone Age humans does not apply to them, just as little as the romantic idea of indigenous life in harmony with nature. But how does a society function without hierarchy, without property, without social institutions, and without complex technologies? What does daily life look like in a world that does not extend beyond the boundaries of the rainforest? What do the hunters and gatherers think of the 'strange beings' from industrialized countries, who do not find their way in the rainforest and therefore offer pure entertainment? Khaled Hakami, macro-sociologist at the University of Vienna, won first prize with his lecture at the Discovery Days in Flims. His story is so exciting and provocative that it was talked about for days after the festival. He not only talks about the hunters and gatherers but also humorously translates their everyday life and values to our Western society.
