Description
Christmas brought a true marathon of worship services for Bach and his Thomaner choir. No wonder he made the opening chorus of the chorale cantata BWV 133, intended for the third day of Christmas 1724, at least in the choir parts, distinctly accessible. But how much radiant nativity joy pervades this movement and the entire cantata, which in text and music makes the “hearing” of the “lovely” message the royal road to a sensual knowledge of God! And what warmth and intimacy can be overheard in the two arias, in which Bach humanizes this “incomprehensible being” in a comforting way.
