A journey around the Earth in 80 days? No problem, says the English gentleman Phileas Fogg and immediately bets 20,000 pounds that he will succeed in this endeavor: After all, the Suez Canal is open and the railway across the USA is completed. But then his servant resigns, and the only replacement is a boy who doesn't even have a name and calls himself Passepartout, "Everywhere." The unlikely pair sets off on the journey. By ship, train, carriage, hot air balloon, and elephant, they travel, experience all kinds of adventures, rescue an Indian princess, and realize that they might be more alike than they thought. Moreover, they are pursued by a detective in their race against time around the world. Despite all adversities, they reach London after 80 days but are disappointed to find that they have exceeded the agreed time limit by five minutes. Will Phileas Fogg still win his bet? The French author JULES VERNE (1828–1905) published his successful novel in 1873 and became one of the first science fiction authors – after all, his readers at the time considered submarines or moon rockets pure utopias.
