1914: The 19-year-old Paul Bäumer and his classmates have their high school diploma and, encouraged by their teacher, enthusiastically enlist for service in World War I. Paul survives four years facing death constantly – everything seems to be heading towards a good end, but fate has other plans. Paul Bäumer falls in October 1918 – on a day so calm and silent on the entire front that the military report is limited to the phrase "All Quiet on the Western Front."
His novel, named after this report, made Erich Maria Remarque instantly famous in 1928: Blood young men, exposed to a hell of drumfire, trenches, and poison gas attacks, brutally recount the everyday life of war. They describe the traumatic shift between idle boredom and deadly combat, between patriotic hero myth and loneliness, between speechlessness at home and camaraderie in the field. Horror stands next to senselessness, the scent of a suckling pig next to mangled bodies…
