Description

‘I don’t make spells anymore; now I make offerings.’ What does it mean to let go and return to oneself? This question is posed by "Offering", the latest album from Ibeyi. Four years after their third album "Spell31", the French-Cuban twins take us on a journey of rediscovery, a development of their sound and self. "Offering" is an invitation to let go. Today, twelve years after their breakthrough EP "Oya", Ibeyi are less interested in seeking validation; they stand firm in their beliefs and their art. "Offering" is also Ibeyi's first project since their shift to independence, where they collaborate with a range of new producers, with Naomi and Lisa-Kiandé Diaz handing over the reins for percussion and piano to a variety of talented musicians. The Ibeyi stamp is still present and builds on their previous EP and the three albums that brought them worldwide recognition: they sing in English, French, Spanish, and Yoruba, accompanied by their enchanting voices. And now, on "Offering", we traverse a kaleidoscope of thumping percussion and heavy bass to subtle invocations and delicate harmonies. Through their visuals, Ibeyi invite the audience into a part of their world they have never shared before: Cuba. Completely shot on location in Havana and in collaboration with local artists, musicians, and their community, the visuals of "Offering" are the manifestation of their homecoming. Looking to the future, their latest project is a hopeful revolution of self, representing a vulnerability that can only come with aging, accepting failures, and experiencing them.
