How Do Plants Adapt to Different Altitudes?

Description

Based on populations of rock carnations and Chartreuse carnations in the canton of Valais, the research project studies the ecological processes and climatic conditions that play a role in adaptation to different altitudes. The results should help to better understand how plants have adapted to their environment. This will also allow for estimating how plants respond to climate change. In the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park, ETH Zurich conducts research on two experimental sites in Leuk (Lichten) and Guttet (Oberu). High-altitude and low-altitude plants differ, for example, in their flowering time and cold sensitivity. It is now important to study the significance of these differences for survival and reproduction at both sites. During the growing season, researchers record at least once a week which plants are flowering and how many seeds they produce. Additionally, they note, for example, the size of the plants and the number of flowers. During winter, the sites are monitored monthly. Alex Widmer from ETH Zurich will provide firsthand information.
