Holger Stark - 'The Adult Land. Germany without America – a Historical Opportunity'

Description

Without America, there is no Europe; without US soldiers, there is no security – that was the formula that has applied since World War II. With Donald Trump, this era is irrevocably coming to an end. The Americans are no longer friends. For the Baby Boomers and everyone after them, who grew up with Levi’s jeans and Big Macs, this means the end of a worldview. Holger Stark analyzes in depth and from close range why Trump's USA is not just a snapshot, but the beginning of something new. The award-winning journalist and bestseller author tells us what we need to prepare for: Based on conversations with leaders and ministers in Berlin, Brussels, and Washington, he reconstructs the mistakes of the past 25 years – and paints a picture of what a future beyond America could look like. It is time for Germany to grow up. It could become a second moment similar to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Holger Stark is deputy editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT and one of the most renowned journalists in the country. He has been reporting on the USA for 30 years, and from 2013 to 2017, he followed Donald Trump's rise as a correspondent in Washington. His revelation (together with colleagues) that the NSA had tapped Angela Merkel's phone triggered a serious crisis in German-American relations. "(...) vividly, fluently, straightforwardly written, intelligently and insightfully interpreted, well composed. In view of the geopolitical dramas, one is grateful for clear language and rational analysis." Süddeutsche Zeitung, Viola Schenz (02/26)
