Adaptation: Torsten Fischer Faster, further, bigger: Heinrich Faust's insatiable desire knows no bounds. What begins as a risky wager with Mephisto develops into a rapid witch ride through space and time. From the intimate tragedy of the Gretchen episode in the 'small world' to the creation of a human in a test tube (Homunculus) and the colonization of nature in the 'large world', Goethe's universe spans into our present. Torsten Fischer's interpretation sees this restless striving as the hubris of the modern human and the true origin of our modern civilization. Faust appears as a driven figure, whose spirit flies over itself, while he attempts to gain land and conquer the sea in a radical act of self-assertion. This is about the whole: power and possession, technology and vision, as well as the ruthless subjugation of man and nature. This path leads directly into the Anthropocene – the new geological epoch in which humanity has become the dominant factor of the Earth's system and thus bears full responsibility for the future of the planet. Faust's fate is inextricably linked to the question of whether we are capable of taking responsibility for the future. The play unfolds as an inexhaustible world theater, oscillating between ancient beauty and modern destructive rage. However, the end of the journey is not a final downfall, but the realization of an eternal cycle. In the sense of 'Die and Become', Faust's restlessness dissolves into the infinity of creation, and as in the 'Prologue in Heaven', the game of life begins anew.
