Le Piano Symphonique continues the idea of 'Next Generation' in a new dimension in 2027: with the Japanese pianist and composer Hayato Sumino. Experience classical music for a new generation as Sumino combines popular classics with jazz, tango, and original compositions alongside the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Hayato Sumino (*1995) is also known to millions as 'Cateen.' On his YouTube channel, he presents neoclassical original compositions with jazz and pop elements alongside classical pieces. His live performances bring a young audience and fresh energy to the classical scene. At Le Piano Symphonique, the pianist collaborates with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in various formations. The program follows the festival's core idea as well as Sumino's efforts to popularize classical music. The orchestra draws from the classical hit parade with Camille Saint-Saëns' Danse macabre, Maurice Ravel's Boléro, and George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, featuring Sumino as the soloist. In between, Sumino explores the emotional potential of romantic piano music in Chopin Orbit and his original composition Recollection for piano and string quintet, blending it with impressionistic shimmering sound painting. The nervously driven tango melancholy of Astor Piazzolla's Primavera porteña showcases Sumino – with musicians from the orchestra – as a light-footed tightrope walker between genres.
