“Do You Want to Swing?” is a playground satire with no educational content or pretensions. The play is about an actress and an actor who are reading a play they wrote themselves. In it, a woman and a man meet at a playground. At first by chance, but eventually time and again. She’s German. He’s Swiss. He delights in the parents’ suffering; she takes pleasure in manipulating the playground equipment. With due detachment and without moralizing, they tackle major and relevant themes and don’t shy away from sensitive questions. Even superficial clichés take on depth in their conversation, while linguistic differences bring cultural distinctions to light. She: “We say ‘roughly.’”
He: “We say ‘wrist times pi.’”
She: “Oh, how imprecise.” With each passing day, the bond between the two people on the playground grows stronger. He talks about his neighbor, the “nice Nazi”; she explains that she’s writing a study on “the big picture in the small details.” Together, they observe little dictators in the sand while keeping the world’s great leaders in mind. The boundaries between a bird’s-eye view, insight, and confidence seem to dissolve, giving rise to a challenging interplay between observers and the observed.
