Description

A play with live music and a subsequent panel discussion At 78 years old, architect Elisabeth Gärtner expresses the wish to end her life. Since her beloved husband passed away three years ago after a long battle with cancer, her sense of purpose has vanished. Mrs. Gärtner, who is neither terminally ill nor suffering from severe pain, requests a prescription for a lethal dose of sodium pentobarbital from her ophthalmologist and confidante, Dr. Brandt. However, she is reluctant to assist in suicide due to ethical concerns. In Switzerland, assisted dying is legally regulated. Sodium pentobarbital can be prescribed by doctors at the request of patients without legal consequences, with few exceptions. This relatively liberal regulation does not free society from the ethical and moral debate surrounding the issue. In the play, a fictional ethics committee discusses the case. Legal, medical, and theological experts argue over the controversial topic. Should doctors assist in suicide? Does a person have the right to die with dignity? At the end of the play, the audience must make their judgment using a voting button.
