Solothurn's Christmas lights sparkle like the starry sky and already express the customs lived today. What did the starry sky look like on Christmas night, and when was Jesus born? Why is a Barbara twig cut, and what does this mean for the future? Who knows the story of Barbara wheat?

Advent, the time of expectation, is beautified with an Advent wreath or an Advent calendar. But why is the Advent wreath round?

In the heated Jesuit church, you can warm up and admire the unique Rococo nativity scene with intact symbolism, a true nativity jewel! But where does this beautiful custom originate? Was it Francis of Assisi in Greccio or the mystery and crib plays? How did the plastic representations come from the churches into private homes?

In the festively decorated Red Tower, there is hot mulled wine and gingerbread for refreshment – entirely in the spirit of tradition. Who knows the 7 gingerbread spices? Who knows the difference between Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, and the Christ Child? And the story of the Christmas tree – originally a pagan custom? Why are glass balls hung on the Christmas tree?

Christmas is a wonderful festival with many sensory customs. The word “custom” derives from “to need.” Every year, these meaningful and beautiful customs are revived. Participants learn from Marie-Christine Egger the history and background from the pre-Christian winter solstice to today's Christmas festival and current Christmas customs. Afterwards, the customs will surely be lived and loved even more and applied more consciously – entirely in the spirit of a peaceful Christmas season.
