Portrait performance by Natasha Vergilio – Strobe lights will be used during the performance! In Portuguese with English subtitles. The body is the medium to delve into ever new worlds. The body is suppressed, the body is free. Natasha Vergilio's art consists of pushing into new spaces with the centrifugal force of her own body movement, for herself and for others – now she presents Gira, her portrait performance at Ballhaus Naunynstraße! When she looks back, she sees the traces of many feet in the sandy ground. Is the self alone? In European, market-oriented thinking, the self is an autonomous point, less than a star. More likely, however, is: the self is uma banda. We are because others were before us. And others are with us. Day by day, we practice not to stand out, not to displease, not to awaken fear. The patriarchy takes time and energy. Natasha Vergilio dances, for not only the techniques of a lowered gaze are inherited, but also the strength and courage to stand out, to make the other resonate, and to bring forth life. She dances because some before her have solidified the ground, invented terms like 'queer' and 'non-binary', because they developed relationships. They dance because the self is so many: ancestors, spirits, and envoys, pomba giras, because they may have already lived and thus know life, because they are not alone. They dance to generate the vibration in resistance that keeps life alive, to spark. Natasha Vergilio pays homage this evening to the feminine side of her family; by dancing upright, in circles, into new spaces. Portrait performances are a risk: here, the role profile does not count, what one has always done, because others, directors, and producers see that 'in' one, but what one wants to tell oneself. PORTRAIT is the invitation for artists to show themselves and what is important to them. It is the invitation for the audience to encounter artists in previously unseen complexity.
