For the uninitiated: A good entry point into the shamanic post-punk of GILLA BAND is their latest single 'Giraffe'. Repetition, Repetition, Repetition is the fluorescent mantra of hypnosis. One hears the speed-soaked noise of The Fall and Sonic Youth, while the bass carves the same groove, and the guitar rasps with sparkling dissonance. As the song approaches its climax, it drifts from krautrock's third gear into techno autopilot. The dance floor is clear for Dara Kiely's whiny tirades: 'She chased me with a comb,' he speaks-sings with moody cheekiness, 'and demanded that I put on a decent jacket.' Brilliant! Since 2015, the quartet from Dublin, which was called Girl Band until 2021, has been releasing exciting and demanding albums. Post-punk, industrial, and raw noise merge into a whirling sound carousel that spins faster and faster – or as guitarist Alan Duggan puts it: 'To the most extreme form of punk.' At the edges, the band provokes the breaking point, but at the core of their spectacular sound body, they remain danceable. A trip.
With the British noise rock trio MAKESHIFT ART BAR, the guitars collide, the electronics thrum, intensely, chaotically, and atmospherically swaying between apocalypse and salvation, between The Birthday Party, Viagra Boys, and Sonic Youth. We look forward to their second visit to Bogen F.
