The program is entirely dedicated to the genius yet controversial Renaissance prince and composer Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa. His late madrigals represent the absolute peak of chromatic polyphony – they are full of unexpected harmonic twists, dissonances, and extreme emotional tension that preceded their time by centuries. The vocal ensemble The Quintet S! will present these technically and expressively demanding pieces in the intimacy of the Back Synagogue. The concert will be scenically enhanced by sensitive work with light and shadow, emphasizing the dramatic contrast between sin and redemption, which is so typical of Gesualdo's work.
