Description

NEED FOR CONVERSATION – ATTACK FROM THE RIGHT
Christoph Bartmann and Carsten Brosda want to talk about the fight for culture. In September, we had our first "Need for Conversation" and discussed the situation in East Germany with guests and an engaged audience. In this new edition, two recognized experts, Christoph Bartmann and Carsten Brosda, who are concerned with the future of culture, especially in the international context, are guests. The evening is based on Christoph Bartmann's current book, who has been the long-time director of the Goethe-Institutes in Copenhagen, New York, and Warsaw. In "Attack from the Right – The New Fight for Culture" (Hanser), the author and critic shows, using international examples, how right-wing populists use cultural policy as a battleground for their ideology. He warns: if the liberal center does not take this threat seriously, the right will have an easy game. It is not too late yet to develop strategies against their cultural struggle, Bartmann postulates. How these could look like, he initially discusses with Carsten Brosda, Hamburg's Cultural Senator and one of the most intelligent and prudent politicians: "The arts open spaces where we negotiate how we want to be," says the president of the German Stage Association on the occasion of the annual meeting. After an hour of moderated panel discussion, we open the round before the last half hour where the audience and panel discuss their insights with each other. Moderation: Christine Watty The series "Need for Conversation" is supported by the ZEIT Foundation BUCERIUS
