A swirling play of colors for piano and trumpet The talented pianist and improviser Gabriela Montero returns to the Zurich Chamber Orchestra after her exhilarating performance two years ago with Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1. This work – composed in 1933 during a phase of artistic carefree-ness before the oppressive censorship of later years – was understood by Shostakovich himself as a "mocking challenge" to the traditional solo concerto. A glance at the instrumentation makes this clear. Shostakovich pairs the solo piano with a solo trumpet – interpreted in this program by Simon Höfele. And then there is the music: an entertaining, sometimes rapid game of puzzles full of quotes, humorous hints, and surprising twists. Before this original stroke of genius, the program features the fleetingly playful, originally for piano written miniatures Visions fugitives by Sergei Prokofiev, as well as two warmly illuminated nature studies by Leoš Janáček and the British late Romantic Ruth Gipps.
