His discreet nature, away from scandals, his attendance at fashionable salons, earned him this subdued reputation… Like his father before him, a schoolteacher in his native Ariège, little Gabriel is a pure product of French meritocracy. Independent-minded but loyal servant of the State, he endeavored to encourage talents around him. Many of his masterpieces have become immortal: his Pavane, the famous Sicilienne, so many sublime melodies, his Requiem, "lullaby of death," a pure jewel of luminous spirituality… But, to truly grasp Fauré's magic, one must taste the more secret treasures of his chamber music, the subtle melismas of his harmonies unlike any other, hiding metaphysical depths: a purity of soul that is best understood with the heart…
