Description

Sergej Prokofjew often collected his musical material long before incorporating it into his compositions. For example, he used numerous themes from his opera "The Fiery Angel" in his Third Symphony, which was not performed during his lifetime. Prokofjew emphasized that the opera's plot was not relevant to the symphony. The dark mood of this drama about madness, invocation, and inquisition is still clearly reflected in the C minor Symphony. The Sinfonic Cello Concerto is based on material from Prokofjew's earlier cello concerto, which he reworked at the suggestion of cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. As part of our Prokofjew cycle, Sol Gabetta interprets this final concert work by Prokofjew. Gianandrea Noseda conducts Prokofjew's works as well as the piece "core" by Swiss composer Dieter Ammann, created in 2002, at the podium of the Zurich Opera Orchestra.
