Description
Every year on the third Sunday before Easter, large bonfires are stacked and lit in Appenzell to chase away winter. At the top of the wood pile, the sparks girl made of fireworks personifies winter. This custom is extremely popular among children and teenagers and will delight every fire enthusiast. The Funkensonntag is especially impressive in the Ried (a former poor district) near the Restaurant Freudenberg in Appenzell.
