Description

In 2001, Ulysse Nardin marked a major turning point in watchmaking history with an extraordinary creation: the Freak. Without a dial, hands, or crown, it became the first timepiece in history to incorporate silicon components, inaugurating a new era for watch precision. Designed as a true laboratory on the wrist, this revolutionary watch was born from the meeting of Rolf Schnyder's bold vision, Dr. Ludwig Oechslin's research, and the disruptive idea conceived a few years earlier by Carole Forestier-Kasapi. Together, they created a disruptive horological object: the movement itself becomes the hour indicator, while silicon opens up technical perspectives previously unimaginable for the entire industry. During this 30 MIN CHRONO, Adeline Vernaz, International Training & Heritage Manager at Ulysse Nardin, will offer an immersion into the 25 years of history and evolution of the Freak through historical archives, prototypes, calibers, and major innovations. This event will also be an opportunity to explore the technological advances initiated by Ulysse Nardin and the Freak: from the introduction of silicon – now a standard for much of the watch industry – to DIAMonSIL® technology, including the first revolutionary escapements and the 35 patents developed around this iconic collection. Twenty-five years after this historic turning point, the Freak remains more than an experimental watch: a visionary creation that has profoundly transformed contemporary watchmaking and continues to influence the entire industry today.
