Follia - Verrutscht

Description

It is the attempt to leave the fragments as they are, instead of putting them back together. No glue, no reconstruction, but a musical observation of what remains when things fall apart. After more than two years since the last release, during which they performed on larger and smaller stages across Switzerland, Follia traveled with all their gear to Berlin to record their second EP at Daniel Freitag's studio. Together with Dino Brandão as co-producer and percussionist Maria Schneider (Project: Mascha Juno), five songs are created. They are still carried by Follia's voice and the double bass. Supported by piano, synthesizer, and percussion, they move in the border area of songwriting, pop, and art song – also called: Kontra-Pop. Follia does not shy away from extremes: she plays with sonic intimacy and orchestral expansiveness, jarring, transcendent singing, and gentle humming. She sings in German and Swiss German texts about shifts in perspectives, relationships, societal certainties. She tells of breaks, new beginnings, and the attempt to not lose oneself amidst the movements. About the songs: Tausend Hälften A cynical, yet urgent song, carried by a chromatically wandering bassline and percussive outbursts. It describes the currently skewed world situation – with a simple message: We should dare to listen to each other again. Verrutscht Gently played major seventh chords on the piano leave one hovering in the balance. This reflects the lyrical statement: Everything is verrutscht, even you. The double bass responds like a distant call, a second voice from the depths. Zundhölzli This song tells of the fragile boundary between power and helplessness. The song begins plainly with simple quarter beats, which drive it from the start. Over it lies a carpet of a four-part choir – mystical, the voices almost childlike. Thus, the song moves between gentleness and a certain primitiveness. Together with the other two songs Uf and devo and Fieberliebe, a complete picture emerges of what can happen when everything verrutscht: loss of control and ecstasy go hand in hand.
