Having to say goodbye to a loved one is arguably one of the hardest things of all. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote his famous choral motets as funeral music for deceased family members and musicians close to him—works of farewell, but also of hope for a warm welcome in another world. Hubert Parry (1848–1918), one of England’s most influential music educators and a Bach biographer, bid farewell in multiple ways with what is arguably his most significant work, the late choral cycle “Songs of Farewell”: Seriously ill himself, the First World War robbed him of some of his most talented students and also permanently disrupted the musical ties between England and Germany. The Collegium Vocale and organist Freddie James juxtapose the legacy works of Bach and Parry—music of farewell and welcome, of passing and renewal.
